that will kill the GOP. Rather, they will go into hibernation for the Summer and wake up after Labor Day.

This may be the last chance for the GOP. You have a sitting Governor with crummy ratings. If they can't win this one, they might as well retreat into their present redoubts and be a permanent opposition.

Christie's pronouncemment of being "I am who I am" seems to be a forerunner to the reality that he won't be conservative enough to survive a GOP Primary much the same way Rudy Giuliani crashed & burned in the early GOP primaries and caucuses.

The Christie campaign in many ways is taking the shape of a Giuliani style effort.

He's the only one who can win. He's the only Republican who can appeal to Democrats. He's a crime fighter who has never really been vetted by the GOP's rank & file and finds himself on the center stage of NJ politics by virtual default.

How does Christie win?

Does he win trying to redefine what it is to be a Republican?

Didn't work for Rudy. Certainly didn't work for McCain in 08.

Will he suppose only a "left-of-center" Republican is viable?

Can he win his base by running as a pro-choice Republican?

Because his GOP credentials are so thin, will party activists give him a "pass" on the tough social questions that conservatives demand be answered?

Or is NJ so democratic that it doesn't really matter? Corzine is an awful but not unpopular incumbent like Florio. There seems to be no "push" to dump the man from Goldman-Sachs anytime soon and many Republican types seem almost content to remain hopelssly in the minority anyway...

Rudy lost because no one really knew him out side of the tri-state area simple as that. He may of gotten a burst of fame after 9/11, but he talked about it too much and everyone forgot about him.

Democrats quickly united behind him because the idea of 4 more years of a Republican President overrode everything...as 4 more years of a Democrat governor will override everything this year. Good news is that Corzine has enough dough to enjoy his retirement...I heard he'd always planned to retire at 62! See today's FDU poll...5% of those who approve of Corzine's job aren't voting for him...a dios Commrade Corzine!!!

Wait and See

I am one of those Republican primary voters that is taking a wait-and-see approach to this one.

Christie is at least nominally pro-life and may be the most-electable Republican but not if he tries to run merely on an anti-corruption platform. Recent races by "moderate" Republicans clearly show that corruption is not enough of an issue to carry the day by itself.

It doesn't give me much comfort that all the folks who have driven the NJ Republican party to the brink of political bankruptcy are quickly lining up behind Christie. I'd like to see if he gets any conservative supporters of note.

Has a primary worked before?

We (the GOP) have had contested primaries in every statewide race recently - and we have always lost. The debates are interesting, but we fail in November. Mr. Christie has waited until January to announce, which allowed Lonegan, Merkt, et. al. to rally their camps and cause yet another split in the party. If Christie had announced last June, and sat down with Merkt and Lonegan - and listened to their ideas, and shown them some courtesy, and asked them to join with him for the party's benefit - perhaps we would have avoided the inevitable hurt feelings that will now result. In 2005 Burlington, Ocean, Monmouth, and Bergen counties all endorsed different people, and - surprise! - we lost in November. Just once I'd like to see a candidate openly try to unite the party by reaching out to the many factions inside the party, and listen to them early on. Senator Kean may have tried this in 2006, and perhaps Mr. Ginty challenged him out of spite. But factions have killed the party's chances year after year. An uncontested primary would be a nice change.

anointment as the front runner by the NJGOP machine that has delivered 100% failure should give great pause to the GOP rank and file.

The upside, is that this time, a life long protector of taxpayers might actually get heard.

I don't hold out much hope the corporate media will let him be heard for long before the "kook" remarks start coming.

The NJGOP leadership is dead in the water, unless the town committees start waking up and stop marching to the socailist tune of the NJGOP, the exodus of taxpayers out of NJ will continue.

Concerns of a GOP Primary Voter

My concerns are like many people's here. I am concerned that Christie is supported by those who have brought this party to the brink of its knees and not only managed not to reach out to minorities but constantly losing white ethnic voters like myself (Corzine's victories in Bayonne, Belleville, Woodbridge etc.) highlight this fact. I'm concerned that he has no real economic plan except the slogans about affordability blah blah blah...

Lonegan on the other hand has a solid plan for growth and change, but I'm concerned that a small-town mayor with a cantankerous character cannot win statewide. If Lonegan's representative can disprove my concern he may earn my vote.

Lonegan's "cantankerous character"

If it was such a problem, he would have never been elected and reelected three times with double digit margins in a town that voted 64% for Barack Obama and 66% for Frank Lautenberg.

Lonegan is so "cantankerous" that his Republican team kept council control for eleven elections in a row.

People can put down small towns all they want, but in a small town you really get to know someone on a personal basis...and those who know Lonegan best reelected him time and time again.

Republican voters are looking for a candidate who can give a punch as well as take one. Anyone who can't handle punches in the Primary has no business asking to be sent to the General. If Chris Christie is afraid of Steve Lonegan, he doesn't stand a chance against Corzine.

A primary contest for the GOP will be just the ticket for all Jersey voters to get a good look at the candidates. If no Democrat challenges Jon Corzine, so much the better for the GOP, since the media attention will focus on the fresh challenge versus the "same old, same old". It's no slight on any of the GOP contenders, but I believe Chris Christie is the strongest among them for bringing badly needed unity to the party.

Here is what I know about Steve Lonegan: He only won three elections in his entire lifetime -- all for Mayor of Bogota: 1995, 1999 and 2003. Each of these was an off-year election where no gubernatorial, presidential, senatorial or congressional candidates headed the ticket. In other words they were all LOW TURNOUT elections – where senior citizens and Republicans have an advantage over younger voters and Democrats who just don’t get too passionate about elections in tiny towns where the mayoralty is at stake but the governorship and all federal offices are not at stake. Lonegan won these thee tiny small town off-year elections against weak candidates who just did not go to the wall, the way Lonegan did, to grab the $3,000 a year Mayor’s job of a town that has maybe 2,500 votes in those off-year elections. If Lonegan had run in a year where Clinton, Corzine, Menendez, Lautenburg or even McGreevey let alone Obama had led the Democratic ticket – Lonegan would not have stood a chance against the 60% plus share of Bogota votes that went to the Democrat columns in those years. In other words, the bullhockey coming from the Lonegan-Shaftan camp about Lonegan winning in a Democrat town is not telling the whole story. Lonegan and his campaign buddy Shafton lost elections for State Senator, Congress and came in fourth in the 2005 Republican gubernatorial primary. Lonegan’s so called low tax record in Bogota was achieved simply by not by any firetrucks, ambulances or emergency vehicles for a full twelve years and keeping the funding levels for the volunteer fire, first aid and other organizations at levels that were too low to be sustained. Of course at some point the 20-30 year old vehicles had to be or will have to be replaced. Once again, in other words, Lonegan’s management of Bogota was like a homeowner that refuses to maintain his house for ten to twenty years – penny wise but pound foolish in the long run. In my view other budget gimmicks such as having the Police work without contracts and not funding the retro pay increase that would inevitably follow the eventual settlement were ways Lonegan did not keep taxes low – but simply delayed them and caused those DELAYED TAXES to be higher in the end. Lonegan’s bashing of illegal immigrants and then hypocritically hiring them and the reported conflicting stories (allegedly originating from Lonegan himself) about how the immigrants ended up putting together political signs (signs that have a Shatonian flavor to them) in Lonegan’s garage is now legendary – as is his early 2008 press conference concerning an alleged investigation or grand jury concerning the NJ Attorney General. I think Lonegan may be bought and paid for by the Koch organization – which would account for some of his fund raising success. I think the Koch organization funds Americans for Prosperity which seems to have been the Lonegan-Shaftan base of ops for the past few years. A couple of things... First, comparing this primary to McGreevey's 1997 run completely ignores the demographic change that was occurring in NJ - and is still occurring - and is just a lazy analysis by Dr. Marbach. There is no way possible to attribute McGreevey's 25,000 or so-vote loss to the fact that the Democrats had a primary. Pure oversimplification.

Second, I'm of two minds on the GOP side of things. I agree with the critics of the current GOP leadership when they assail the GOP 'elite' (hehe) for being too cozy with their minority status, too ready to go along and get along. There are some good people among the GOP leadership, but way too much dead wood just hanging onto jobs they got bored with years ago. BUT, regardless of how optimistic I try to be, Steve Lonegan simply won't cut it with the voters of NJ. Period. So, there's the quandary. I suggest, if you are a true member of the GOP, to try to rally around the best candidate (Christie) rather than some odd interpretation of an ideology your may harbor.

Status Quo or Someone Who Will Really Do Something?

Pick Christie, the status quo candidate, who actually has some corruption scandals of his own to deal with and you get, at best, nothing, and, more likely, higher taxes and more government programs. Lonegan is the only choice if you want taxes lowered and government a little less in our lives.

That's rich! Governor Corzine waited until the Fall of 2008 to even start talking about cutting budgets. Typical of wanting to hide his record of tax-and-spend.

Lonegan is THE formidable candidate in this race. He has the message, the commitment and the fortitude.

If you want to learn the truth, you should go to www.christieiscorrupt.com and check out our video. Sign the petition to get involved. We have to stop Chris Christie. If he wins this nomination the national Republican Party will look even more corrupt and foolish than ever before (not to mention that Corzine will stomp him in the fall).
