Gay Marriage-The Next Big Vote

Ask anyone about the big vote this fall and they’ll think you are talking about the gubernatorial showdown between frontrunner Chris Christie, incumbent Jon Corzine, and potential spoiler Chris Daggett. There’s another big vote that will happen just after the November election and that’s the vote on “gay marriage”.
Speaker Joe Roberts has promised a vote on this issue during the lame-duck session of the Legislature and proponents of “gay marriage” have been working overtime counting heads and lobbying fence-sitters. Democrat legislators, the majority in the Assembly, probably have the votes to pass it – the Senate is another matter.
Unfortunately, those who support marriage based on tradition and biology have yet to launch an effort to lock-down support in either house. One Democrat Senator who would like to oppose “gay marriage” has yet to hear from a single supporter of traditional marriage, but has heard from a lot of supporters of “gay marriage”.
Where does the New Jersey GOP stand on “gay marriage”?
Both Republican candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor are on the record as opposing “gay marriage”. With Governor Corzine’s choice of Loretta Weinberg as his running mate, the contrast couldn’t be plainer. Senator Weinberg is one of the most principled proponents of “gay marriage” in New Jersey.
Unfortunately, the issue is being ignored by the GOP, and if Republicans are going to play a role regarding “gay marriage” in New Jersey the time to act is now. Waiting until after the election to protect traditional marriage is not an option. It will be too late.
This brings us to the controversy over the Chairman of the New Jersey Republican State Committee’s refusal to allow a meeting to endorse or adopt the platform of the Republican Party. The Republican Party platform adopted in August 2008 by delegates from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the territories contains planks supporting traditional marriage and the right to life. Here are those planks:
“Because our children’s future is best preserved within the traditional understanding of marriage, we call for a constitutional amendment that fully protects marriage as a union of a man and a woman, so that judges cannot make other arrangements equivalent to it. In the absence of a national amendment, we support the right of the people of the various states to affirm traditional marriage through state initiatives.”
“Faithful to the first guarantee of the Declaration of Independence, we assert the inherent dignity and sanctity of all human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed. We support a human life amendment to the Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment’s protections apply to unborn children. We oppose using public revenues to promote or perform abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it. We support the appointment of judges who respect traditional family values and the sanctity and dignity of innocent human life… At its core, abortion is a fundamental assault on the sanctity of innocent human life. Women deserve better than abortion. Every effort should be made to work with women considering abortion to enable and empower them to choose life.”
Last week, Chairman Jay Webber indicated to a conservative leader that he had no intention of calling a meeting to consider a motion to adopt the Republican Party platform until after the November election. Webber is required by his own party by-laws to hold four meetings a year. He has held one so far this year.
Some close to the Christie campaign have expressed concerns with adopting the platform, citing running mate Kim Guadagno’s position on the life issue. She identifies herself as “pro-choice” on abortion.
Okay, let’s agree to disagree, but that shouldn’t stop the State GOP from taking a public position strongly in favor of traditional marriage. Taking a stand will put the State GOP firmly on the side of its candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor, while sending a message to Republican legislators that they will be expected to back traditional marriage.
There aren’t enough votes from the majority side of the aisle to pass “gay marriage”. They will need Republican votes to eclipse traditional marriage in New Jersey. If Jay Webber and the State GOP do nothing they will deliver an easy legislative victory to the allies of “Gay Marriage”!
If Assemblyman Webber is still the conservative he says he is or once was, he can prevent the overthrow of traditional marriage by calling a meeting of the New Jersey Republican State Committee to pass a motion to support traditional marriage and to urge each and every Republican legislator to vote for traditional marriage by voting against “gay marriage”.
The Republicans seem to have difficulty taking a stand on a lot of issues. Well, you either believe in traditional values or not. Without a vote to affirm what the GOP is supposed to believe in, it leaves the position of the State GOP and its candidates in question.
Indecision on positions like this only serves to strengthen the position and support on behalf of the opposition.

What is wrong with people not adopting the RNC platform. Be proud and stand for the principles that have made this country and the party great. STAND UP AND FIGHT.
People and or parties who pick the middle of an issue and not a side are destined to be run over by oncoming traffic from both sides.
Adopt the RNC platform and run that way and you will win if you can articulate the platform and not hide from it.
Party position on gay marriage?
Maybe, instead of focusing his time on divisive social fights where there is disagreement, Dick should call for party positions on things like supporting tax cuts, scaling back union benefits, and opposing pension padding jobs. Oh wait... he opposes tax cuts, supports boosting public pensions, and likes hack jobs that boost pensions.

If people like LaRossa are really interested in protecting "traditional marriage" they should be on board to outlaw divorce.I'd even go for giving the benefits of marriage only to a person's first marriage and not subsequent marriages. Otherwise all these folks who talk about "protecting" traditional marriages, and have been married more than once, are hypocrites.
What are they protecting traditional marriage from ? Gays can not marry now, and yet divorce claims 50 % of marriages. Are they suggesting all these straight men are going to all of a sudden divorce and marry their best male friends ?
They talk about the best interest of children ...yet 50% of traditional marriages end in divorce . How is that protecting children? How many children are growing up in one family homes?
Further , gays work and pay taxes in NJ like everyone else yet do not enjoy all the rights of NJ citizens (like marriage). How many of these conservatives would put up with a situation like that ?
And don't start quoting the Bible. We do not live a theocracy...if you want that, move to Iran .

I find it amazing that no one reads what is written. Clearly most of these comments are from Christie supporters, whihc is fine, but wouldn't it be better to address the issues raised. Attacking the writer only lends credence to what was written.

I support gay marriage and its passage is long over due. Gay marriage doesnt threaten anything, seperate but equal institutions cannot exist-see Brown vs. Board and the 14th Amendment. Marriage has never been defined as people of the same gender. Just look at nature.

Homosexuality is practiced in nature--especially mammals (bonobos are the most famous) but certainly birds too. This ecology fact justifies nothing concerning state policy. But to cite "nature" as evidence harms your argument.
Should government allow same sex marriage?--I have no idea. Personally, I don't care and often believe in smaller government. But it's not about me but everyone else, so leave it for the voters.

What would have haened if we let the voters decide on the issue of segregation in Alabama in the 1960s (or for that matter today)? You cannot allow the tyranny of the majority to infringe upon the rights of the minority. The 14th Amendment provides for equal protection under the law. to exclude gays the right to marry is a violation of this and of common sense. It isnt wrong by any applicable legal standard. If you deny gays the right to marry then you must also deny straits the same right. If you deny heterosexual couples the right to civil unions then gays must also be denied the right...see how that works. We have a Constitution that is to ensure that all are equally protected tht is something you cannot leave to the voters.

There is no reason for homosexuals to be married. It bastardizes the whole meaning of the word marriage. What's next? Marrying your pet? Your child? Your car? It does not make any sense. Twist as you wish. There is neither logic nor justification for homosexuals to marry.
