Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-Sayreville) has dropped out of the race for Assembly Speaker and endorsed Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver (D-East Orange).

"After careful consideration, and in an attempt to strengthen the unity of the Assembly Democratic caucus, I have decided to end my bid to become the next Speaker of the General Assembly.  I will instead be supporting Assemblywoman Shelia Oliver to succeed Joe Roberts as our next Speaker," Wisniewski said in a statement released late this evening.

Wisniewski's withdrawal comes four days after four Democratic Assemblymen from Middlesex County said they would back his bid for Speaker.

Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Ewing) is already in the race, and Democratic State Chairman Joseph Cryan (D-Union) is reportedly considering a bid for Speaker.

"(Oliver) has demonstrated at every level of government her ability to give thoughtful consideration to some of the most important challenges facing our State.  Sheila's extensive support among our colleagues in the legislature - particularly in Essex County - is based on her ability to be an effective and forceful voice for the people of this State," Wisniewski said.  "As Speaker, I believe she will work tirelessly to lead our caucus and build upon the successes of Speaker Roberts.  Sheila has my full support, and I encourage those who would have supported me to give her every possible consideration as we look to the future."
